Thanks to those who came before us, the brave and true, the soldiers and miners and farmers, the simpletons and charlatans, the laggards and dullards and innovators. The schemers and dreamers and half-baked loafers. The rule-followers, the rule-breakers, and the rule benders. The crowd who says things like “We’re all in this together” and the loner who says “Who’s ‘we,’ kemosabe?”
The land speculator, the wagon train captain, the Swedish farmer’s daughter, the Irish blackguards refusing orders, the grifter running a poker game out of the rear of the last wagon. The Cheyenne making a last stand by stampeding buffalo through the ranks of cavalry.
The roots of our raising run deep: country, blues, and country blues.
Gospel and folk songs known to Arkansas dirt farmers and Appalachian miners alike. Backwoods liquor, barley-based or wheat, corn or rye, bunged from oak-staved barrels and rinsed-out milk jugs: Sheeeewwww!… White Lightnin’!
Oh say can you see by that amazing grace.
